Membranophones: The djembe
A non-Western membranophone is a djembe. Djembes are goblet-shaped hand drums, with a carved hardwood body. The head of a traditional djembe is created from animal skin (most commonly, goatskin), which is stretched across the body and secured by a rawhide, intestine, or sinew.
