Woodwind Instruments: Introduction

Various woodwind instruments

Woodwinds were originally named for the material they were made from. The recorder (predecessor to the flute and still in use), oboe, clarinet, and bassoon were all made from wood. Later when the saxophone was invented it was added to the woodwind family because it used a reed and mouthpiece similar to that of a clarinet to produce the sound.
