Other Aerophones

As you can see, these instruments have similarities to Western woodwinds.  Some, like the jug and the pan pipes, are played by blowing across an opening, similarly to the flute.  Others, such as the conch and didgeridoo, are played by buzzing the lips.

The didgeridoo is an instrument created by the indigenous Australians.  This instrument was created almost 1,500 years ago.  It has a distinct sound that often reminds the listener of Australia or New Zealand.

Pan Pipes

Pap pipes or pan flutes are an ancient musical instrument. Several cultures use pan pipes, such as the antara in the Andes, the Paixiao in China, the Wot in Laos and Thailand, and in several African cultures. The pan flute may be straight or curved.

Notice the rattles on the musician playing the pan flute.  These rattles are most likely made of shells or dried out nutshells.  Rattles fall into the category of an idiophone.
