String Instruments Introduction, Continued
The mechanics of string instruments are actually pretty simple! Many of the instruments you will learn about in this module have the same basic structure: They have a hollow body with an opening. The strings are placed over the opening, and when they are plucked, strummed, or bowed, the sound resonates in the hollow part of the instrument. You can see an example of this in the homemade instrument above: rubber bands placed across an opening, such as this plastic food storage container, can be plucked to make different sounds. The sound varies depending on the thickness of the rubber bands and how tightly they’re stretched. The size of the body also impacts the instrument’s sound. What materials could you use to create your own string instrument?
