There are several different germs that can contaminate food when it is not handled properly. Consuming contaminated food can cause sickness and disease (foodborne illness). Researchers have identified more than 250 foodborne diseases.
Common Foodborne Germs
- Norovirus
- Salmonella
- Clostridium perfringens
- Campylobacter
- Staphylococcus aureus (Staph)
Common Symptoms of Food Poisoning
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- Diarrhea
Those most likely to get foodborne illness include:
- Older adults
- Young children
- People with weakened immune systems from medical conditions
- Prenant women
