Food Saftey
Federal Agencies
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that Americans have one of the safest food supplies in the world. In addition to monitoring prescribed medications for safety, they also monitor the U.S. food supply for food borne illesses, contaminants, and recalls.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), also monitors food safety. The conduct inspections at food processing plants, tests food for bateria and other contaminants, as well as inspect food coming in from outside the United States.
Food Storage
In order to keep food safe there are some important things to remember. It is important to follow these tips for food storage:
- Keep hot foods hot, above 140 degrees F
- Keep cold foods cold, below 40 degrees F
This will prevent food poisoning and bacteria growth. The saying is, if in doubt, throw it out! This goes for any food even if you think it is fresh. You can't see if there is bacteria growing on it.
