Etching

The intaglio process of etching is more complicated than engraving, for it first requires the application of a waxy ground on the metal plate. An etching needle is then pulled across the plate, creating the image to be printed, and removing the ground in those areas.

The next step is placing the metal plate in an acid bath. As the waxy ground is resistant to acid, only the areas exposed by the sharp tool would be eaten by acid. After the bath, the remaining ground is wiped away, and  the plate is inked and pressed.
