Drawing
Do you doodle when you are talking on the phone or listening to a lecture? Doodling is drawing, but would you consider it art?
Prior to the Renaissance, artists would sketch out their works, but not create mere drawings—that was a task for the students. Those who studied master artists would draw out the image in an attempt to replicate it. However, during the Renaissance drawing itself became an art form.
Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael would create drawings as preparation for their masterpieces; however, the drawings were also viewed as masterpieces. The detail and quality of the drawings were discussed by critics in as much detail as the final works. Drawing later became a respectable form of art.
