Engraving
In engraving, an early intaglio technique, the artist would use a burin, a sharp metal engraving tool, to create lines in a metal plate. The depth of the lines was determined by the size of the burin pushed across the plate. The plate would then be scraped clean of all the metal shavings, and be inked and pressed.
