2-D: Introduction
(continued)We rely on paper to create newspapers, books, price tags, invitations, and office memos among other things. Technological advancements have made it possible to reduce the amount of paper and paper waste, but it is still a vital aspect of our lives.
Although Egyptians were using papyrus (from which paper was named) as far back as 3000 BC, paper as we know it today was invented in 105 AD by a Chinese court official named Tsai Lun. He used appropriate waste, such as rags, bamboo, and/or inner parts of the tree. He would mix the waste with water, pound it onto a flat surface, then let the water drain and the mixture harden. Voila! The beginning of paper!
This unit will introduce you to various two-dimensional media, such as drawings, paintings, and prints. Many of these forms are created using paper. Let's take a look at the art of drawing.
