Traditional Printmaking Processes: Relief and Intaglio
Traditionally, there are two printmaking processes: relief and intaglio. The relief process consists of carving out portions of a block, such as wood, that would not be inked and pressed. Only the portions that protrude will hold the ink.
Intaglio prints would be carved into. For example, a metal plate, most often used for this process, would be carved into with a sharp object, and the recessed areas would hold the ink. Then the plate would be pressed.
