Period Style

Most people can identify a work produced by Vincent van Gogh. His paintings are very vibrant and expressive, such as Night Café and Sunflowers. The brushstrokes are visible to the eye, and if touched, the dried paint would feel rough. Most work from this same historical period is similar in style.

As you will learn in this week’s assignment, Post-Impressionism stems from Impressionism. The Impressionist painters used thick, painterly brushstrokes to quickly capture a scene, focusing on light and color; however, Post-Impressionists such as van Gogh, also using thick brushstrokes, sought to use more expressive methods to rouse an emotional response from the viewer.
