Light
Artists can also use light to create a sense of perspective. Chiaroscuro is an Italian term meaning “light and dark,” a technique of using shadows and highlighted areas to create dimension. It was further perfected by artists such as Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, developing what is known as tenebrism. Observe the use of tenebrism in this painting. The dark shadows convey a feeling of the unknown, while the bright light source illuminates the main characters.
