Color (continued)

An artist has numerous possibilities for his palette, or colors she chooses to use. The hue can be made lighter by adding a color to white (tint) or darker (shade) by adding black to a color. Artists can also employ a color scheme. Some examples include:

  • Warm: variety of reds and yellows
  • Cool: variety of blues and greens
  • Complementary: colors opposite each other on the color wheel
  • Monotone: various tints and shade of one hue
  • Analogous: 3-5 colors that lie next to each other on the wheel
