Another technique used by artists to create the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface is hatching. Hatch marks are dark areas consisting of parallel lines. The closer the lines are spaced, the darker the area. Cross-hatching, is a process of creating layers of hatch marks in different directions. This method can produce denser areas than hatching and depict a deeper recession of space.
