Design: Art Nouveau
Art Nouveau was in stark contrast to the Arts and Crafts movement. Rather than stiff linear elements, it was quite organic and fluid. Artists such as Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha, and Louis Comfort Tiffany were instrumental in creating interest in this new design.
Design: Art Deco
In the 1920s and 1930s, yet another movement came to the forefront: Art Deco. It was a modern movement that utilized both rare, expensive materials such as ebony and industrial materials such as steel, bringing back the machine that was so despised during the Arts and Crafts movement.
The decorative, geometric, and angular elements found in Art Deco works were derived from art movements like Cubism and Futurism, and from an Egyptian revival.
