France: Pont du Gard
Constructed in the late first century BC, ancient Romans engineered this spectacular aqueduct to transport water to the city of Nimes from natural springs nearly 30 miles away. The three levels of arches stretching 900 feet allowed for a sturdy structure with minimal stone. The uppermost level contained a water trough while the two lower levels were used for transportation. The Pont du Gard still stands 180 feet above the Gard River in Nimes, France.
