Module 2: Section D

Sorting Your Essay Out

Have you ever bought a bookcase or dresser from Target or IKEA? The future furniture comes in dozens of pieces with several types of connectors of various shapes and sizes. Before you can begin to put it together you need to take inventory. Figure out what kinds of pieces and fasteners you have and what goes with what how.

In a persuasive essay this inventory process is just as critical. You certainly wouldn't want to be standing in front of the city council and have your drawers fall down!

Step 1: In this step you will take inventory by updating and adding to your Stake Your Claim Proposal Worksheet. Look at Ryan's persuasive model graphic and think about the kinds of evidence you can add to bolster your support ideas.

Ryan's evidence was very specific. It showed how important it is to give specific information.

Step 2: Begin drafting by constructing each component separately using the evidence chart.

Decide on appeals, types of evidence, and rhetorical devices you will use.

Model your chart after Ryan's persuasive model table to complete part II of your Writing Assignment: Prove It assignment.

Review the following sections of the course, if necessary.

  • Appeals: Logos (logical), Ethos (ethical), Pathos (Emotional)
  • Types of evidence: facts, statistics, case studies, expert testimony, anecdotal evidence, analogies, testimonials, scientific evidence, examples, public opinion, testimonials, logical reasoning, refutation
  • Rhetorical Devices: Irony, paradox, juxtaposition, metaphor, simile, alliteration, oxymoron, repetition, parallelism, hyperbole, understatement, analogy, allusion, personification, rhetorical question

It showed how to find the rhetorical devices, where the appeals would be located, and what different types of evidence looked like.

All of the parts that we worked on, the thesis, support ideas, evidence, and refutation will be put into a selected format. In addition, transitions and connections must be added to make the presentation flow smoothly.
