Module 2: Section C
That's Illogical: Introduction
What Do Vulcans Have To Do With Logic?
What do the Vulcans from Star Trek and the Terminator from the movies have in common? Both characters share an innate sense of purpose and logic. They have no feelings. They don't get angry, they never cry, they do what has to be done without confusion or soul searching. They are purely logical.
As humans, we are drawn to logic. A logical argument should win every time, but in the game of persuasion, logic is not always the strongest card you have in your hand. Sometimes an appeal to an emotion or a belief is more compelling, more manipulative.
Consider the teenager who wants to take the family car on a Friday night. She offers her parents three reasons or arguments for handing over the keys. You decide which is the most convincing. Consider why it is convincing. Click to see which type of appeal each reason uses.

- I love you so much and I know you love me too. Let's not fight about this. I promise I will be responsible. (type)
- You always said you believed that parents should teach their kids responsibility by making them responsible. Walk the talk now. (type)
