Accommodation-Classification Framework for Students with an IEP
and Students with a DoDEA Accommodation Plan
This section identifies the approved accommodations
for all DoDEA system-wide assessments. It
includes pencil-paper and online assessments
for students with an IEP and Accommodation Plan for
Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability in Programs and Activities.
Accommodations are provided in four main areas:
1. Presentation (e.g., repeat directions, read aloud, large print)
2. Response (e.g., mark answers in book, use reference aids, point, use of computer)
3. Timing/Scheduling (e.g., extended time, frequent breaks)
4. Setting (e.g., study carrel, special lighting, separate room)
Each type of accommodation is placed into one of three categories (Categories 1, 2, and 3) that represent
the potential effect the accommodations may have on the results and interpretation of individual student
tests.
The three identified categories of accommodations are:
Category 1—These accommodations are not expected to affect student performance in a way that will
alter the interpretation of assessment scores or what is being measured.
Category 2—These accommodations may affect the interpretation of individual tests.
Category 3—These accommodations may affect the interpretation of the test and may also change what
is being measured.
Recording Accommodations
The assessment coordinator or assessment administrator must record:
1. The reason for the accommodation provided to each student
2. The type of accommodation that is provided to each student
The recording is made on the individual student book, answer sheet, or online software. The reason the
student is receiving the accommodation (i.e., IEP, Accommodation Plan, or ELL) is noted in addition to the
appropriate category: Category 1, Category 2, or Category 3.
Students may receive a different category of accommodation for each portion of the assessment. For
example, a student may have a Category 1 accommodation for the ELA assessment, but have a Category 2
accommodation for the Math assessment, etc.
