The Bathroom, トイレand おてあらい
When you visit Japan, you are wise to learn a few phrases before you go. One such very useful phrase is “トイレは どこですか” or “おてあらいは どこですか.” おてあらい and トイレ both mean the bathroom.
If you are out on the street and need a restroom, you would ask the questions above. It is almost universal to look for the image of the woman in the skirt or the man in trousers and know that this is where the restrooms are.
Usually, there are no paper towels in public bathrooms, so you should carry a handkerchief with you when you are in Japan to wipe your hands after washing.
