Japanese School Days
School starts in April and ends in March in Japan. Entrance ceremony にゅうがくしき in April, and graduation ceremony そつぎょうしき in March are the two biggest events at Japanese schools. The school day in Japan is organized differently than yours. Many times, the students do not change rooms, the teachers do. The students usually stay in their homeroom, クラス or ホームルーム. The students generally do not have lockers since they stay in the same room throughout the day.
Generally, the students have a specific plan of study and they do not have a great deal of choice about what courses they take. For example, English is the only foreign language at the most high schools and students start to study English in junior high school and continue it at high schools. In addition, since 2003 some elementary schools offer foreign languages (mostly English).
Most schools require their students to wear uniforms, せいふく.
