ふとん and Futon
Do you have ふとん in the US? The word futon comes from Japanese language but futon you see in the US is different from ふとん in Japan. Please read some difference through this site.
Traditionally, Japanese people use ふとん when they sleep and it is kept in おしいれ. ふとん is laid out on the たたみ floor at night for sleeping and put away in the おしいれeach morning. Beds became a common feature of the Japanese home only after World War II.
On sunny days people hang ふとん outside to dry. People hand their laundry outside, as well. Using a dryer is not common in Japan.
