Quadrilaterals and Polygons: Parallelograms

Parallelograms: Definition

A parallelogram is a quadrilateral, a four sided figure, in which both pairs of opposite sides are parallel to one another.

A few examples of parallelograms would be:

Three parallelograms

Notice that in each figure, the sides opposite each other are parallel, as indicated by the small arrows. These arrows are used in mathematics to show when lines or line segments are parallel.

In the next few pages, you will be learning the properties of parallelograms, including properties of their sides, their angles and their diagonals.
