Lines and the Coordinate Plane: Graphing the Equation of a Line

Graphing Lines Using Intercepts

Let’s look at two more examples of lines written in Standard Form and how we can graph each using intercepts.

Example 1

3x + 5y = 45

x-intercept: y = 0

3x + 5(0) = 45
3x = 45
x = 15
(15, 0)

y-intercept: x = 0

3(0) + 5y = 45
5y = 45
y = 9
(0, 9)

Graph the two intercepts and draw the line.

line through the points (0, 9) and (15, 0)

Example 2

10x – 4y = 60

x-intercept: y = 0

10x – 4(0) = 60
10x = 60
x = 6
(6, 0)

y-intercept: x = 0

10(0) – 4y = 60
-4y = 60
y = -15
(0, -15)

Graph the two intercepts and draw the line.
