Academic Vocabulary: Greek and Latin Root Words

Root prefix con from Latin meaning with, together. Examples include consensus, meaning a general agreement, concoct, meaning mix ingredients together in a new way, and construct, meaning build or create something.Each module will introduce you to a new set of vocabulary terms or a “big idea” that will guide you through the activities in that section. This section’s “big idea” is the category of academic vocabulary that you may encounter in any subject area. These words are specific to the language of learning and becoming more familiar and comfortable with them will help you to strengthen your skills as a student.

In section 1, you were introduced to the concept of Greek and Latin root words. These are parts of words that originate in the languages of ancient Rome and Greece. Once you start to identify these word parts, you unlock a whole new world of understanding.

Many words that are part of academic vocabulary contain Greek and Latin root words. A common example is the prefix “-con,” which comes from Latin. The prefix “-con” means “with,” or “together.” If you see this prefix as part of a word, it gives you a major clue that the term has something to do with coming together, being with, or joining!
