Academic Vocabulary: Introduction

In this module, you will encounter a variety of myths from around the world. While they may be representative of a particular culture, you may see familiar elements between the stories. You will be asked to write about stories using vocabulary that is specific to literature. However, there is another category of language known as academic vocabulary that is used across all courses. Academic vocabulary is simply the “language” of learning. These are words that will help you understand how to read and understand complex tasks across many subject areas. They are not specific to math, science, English, or social studies. You may not use these terms in everyday conversation but learning more about these words will help you achieve a deeper level of scholarship.
