Linear and Quadratic Functions: Solving Linear Equations and Inequalities

Solving Linear Equations

Keeping our Algebraic Balance in mind, it’s now time to solve linear equations.

Let’s look at our first example.

Solve x + 2 = -9 for x.

While we work on this problem it is important to keep the Algebraic Balance in mind. If we want to get x all by itself, we need to subtract 2 from both sides.

x + 2 – 2 = -9 – 2

x + 0 = -11

x = -11

Presentation Example: Solving Linear Equations

These problems can get a little more difficult, so let’s take a look at another example. Select the play button to begin the example, and then use the solve button to view the solution and use the navigation buttons to pause/stop the example. View the presentation as often as you would like, and take notes as you follow along.  Be sure to set your volume at a reasonable level before you begin.
