Las Actividades: Introduction

El Monumento de la Independencia is located in the Plaza de la Independencia in the colonial section of Quito, Ecuador. This plaza is named for the monument and is the location of the country's governmental offices and is a beautiful section of the city to visit. Many people meet here to visit and enjoy the many things this historic district has to offer.
Ecuador gained independence from Spain on May 24, 1822, and this is the day that the country observes its national celebration of independence each year.

Much of the architecture that you see in Ecuador looks very different from what most Americans are accustomed to seeing. This architecture is very typical in Latin America and is very much the influence of the Spaniards who came to live in these areas.

This was the Banco Central de Ecuador and is an enormous structure that serves as an excellent example of the architectural style of the period. A visit to Quito will show you many examples of this kind of architecture. In the modern sector of the city, the buildings look much like those in cities we are familiar with.
