Introducción: ¿A dónde vas?

Ecuadorians

In the eastern areas of Ecuador, the indigenous people are still very much dependent on the land for all of their needs. These people live in the tropical rain forest of the Oriente and, although are not unfriendly, do not have much contact with the outside world. These Indians still hunt for their food and live peacefully in communities where they are very close-knit. This area of Ecuador has many rivers and it is not surprising to see young children navigating the rivers in their own "dug-out" canoes. In most areas, the homes are built up on stilts to keep out critters and also to protect the dwelling during the time of high rainfall.

Otavalo, Ecuador
Otavalo is a city located north of Quito and is where a wonderful market takes place on Saturdays. The otavaleños are skilled artisans and are able to make a variety of items by hand—textiles, ceramics, clothing items, etc. It is a very fun day to spend time wandering through the market to see a wide diversity of items.

Ecuadorian textiles

These are hand-woven items. In Otavalo, you can buy gloves, sweaters, jackets, vests, bags and wall hangings such as these that have been crafted by local people. You get to bargain at the market, so you will want to be sure and brush up on your Spanish!
