Kabuki

Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed Shogun by the emperor and established his government in Edo (the ancient name for Tokyo). The Tokugawa Shoguenate continued to rule Japan for 250 years. Leyasu enforced the suppression and persecution of Christianity from 1614 on and restricted foreign trade. All foreign books were banned. The contacts to the outside world were limited to China and the Netherlands in the port of Nagasaki. Japan was in isolation for 250 years. Despite the isolation, traditional Japanese cultures flourished during Edo period, especially during the Genroku era (1688 – 1703). New art forms like kabuki and ukiyoe became very popular especially among the townspeople.
