Key Concepts こ そ あ ど Words

Demonstrative pronouns (これ,それ,あれどれ) are used to point out or to indicate a specific person, thing, place or direction. The following chart shows the primary demonstratives in Japanese. Demonstrative adjectives (この,その,あの, どの) are followed by a noun or noun phrase.

word is used when referring to things, people and places close to the speaker.

word is used when referring to things, people and places close to the listener, or slightly removed from both the speaker and the listener.

word is used when referring to people, things and places far away from the speaker and the listener.
