Intercepts

When a point falls directly on the x- or y-axis, it is called an intercept.


Intercepts are particularly useful when describing the graphs of lines.

The x-intercept falls directly on the x-axis and has coordinates (x, 0).  That is because the x-coordinate can be any number, but the y-coordinate of the x-axis is always 0.

Similarly, the y-intercept falls directly on the y-axis and has coordinates (0, y).  The y-coordinate can be any number, but the x-coordinate of the y-axis is always 0.

A is y-intercept and B is an x-intercept.
