Lines and the Coordinate Plane: The Coordinate Plane

The Coordinate Plane

coordinate plane with horizontal x-axis labeled from negative 5 to 5 and vertical y-axis labeled from negative 5 to 5

The coordinate plane is a grid made up of parallel and perpendicular lines.  Remember that a plane is a flat surface that extends infinitely in all directions.  Each location on the plane is represented by a point.  We designate the location with a set of coordinates.

The coordinate plane is also known as the Cartesian plane, named after mathematician Rene Descartes who is credited with creating the plane.

Presentation Example: The Coordinate Plane

Let’s work through an example of solving problems using the coordinate plane. Select the play button to begin the example, and then use the solve button to view the solution and use the navigation buttons to pause/stop the example. View the presentation as often as you would like, and take notes as you follow along.  Be sure to set your volume at a reasonable level before you begin.
