Great Serpent Mound
The Native American Mississippian culture, now referred to as Adena, formed burial mounds in what is now Adams County, Ohio. Burial mounds, a common feature in the Mississippi and Ohio river valleys, contained the remains of leaders and valuable goods, which reveal extensive trade with other regions.
One particular burial mound, The Great Serpent Mound, extends 1330 feet in length and 3 feet in height. An aerial view reveals what appears to be a serpent consuming an egg (actually a pile of stones) with a coiled tail. It is open today for tourists to view.
