Masks

African masks that hang in isolation in museums do not provide a true representation of the function and purpose they have held. The African mask embodies the spirit of a being or deceased ancestor and is worn as part of a larger ensemble. Used in rituals, ceremonies, and initiations, it is worn by men regardless of the gender the mask portrays. In most cases, the performance is accompanied by music and very stylized dancing.
