Linear and Quadratic Functions: Functions and Relations

Warm-Up Icon Section Warm-Up

Let’s draw on some of your knowledge from previous math classes and start our discussion of functions. What is a function? How do you know that an equation, a graph, or a set of points is a function? Those are the questions that we are going to answer in this first section of the "Linear and Quadratic Functions" unit.

As a warm-up we are going to be looking at sets of numbers. For each of the following sets of ordered pairs, write all the values of x and all the values of y in a table just like this.

x
y

Keep this list handy while you go through this section. You will learn why these values are important.

  1. {(3, 5), (5, 10), (2, 5), (12, 15), (14, 19)}
  2. {(-5, 6), (-5, 8), (-3, 9), (-3, 10)}
