speisequark

We’ve already seen one new product: “Vanillinzucker.” Here’s another food that is seldom found in the USA: “Speisequark” (or merely “Quark”). It’s a dairy product, softer than cream cheese but firmer than yoghurt. It’s usually combined with fruit and is seldom eaten plain. It’s also used in baking a cake that is similar to a cheesecake.

Noch etwas
If you really want to say who was actually doing the action in a passive sentence, English uses the preposition „by.“
“You’re being observed by the teacher.”
“The car is being repaired by the mechanic.”
“ The leaves are blown by the wind .”

In German, you use the preposition “von.”

Versuch’s mit den Sätzen oben.

The peas are eaten by the baby. answer (arrow)
The beef is being served by the waiter. answer (arrow)
The potatoes are being baked by the cook. answer (arrow)
The mixer is being repaired by her father. answer (arrow)
The sugar is weighed by the baker. answer (arrow)
The recipe is read by the teacher. answer (arrow)
You’re being observed by the police. answer (arrow)
The grapes are being eaten by the kids. answer (arrow)
The coffee is being cooked (made) by my grandmother. answer (arrow)

Did some of the sentences sound a bit odd?  That’s because the whole point of the passive is to focus on the action and who/what it’s getting done to, rather than worrying about who’s doing it.
