Las Comidas: Introduction
Sancocho is a widely popular dish in South America and the Dominican Republic. Normally, Sancocho is a thick stew made of a combination of vegetables, broth, beans, and meat. However, the exact ingredients vary from region to region depending on the availability of the food. For instance, Sancocho from Colombia would normally contain chunks of corn. However, corn is not a normal staple in the Dominican Republic and is not found in traditional Dominican Sancocho. |
Another common and inexpensive dish in Latin America is rice with beans. This dish varies widely from country to country and region to region. In la República Dominicana, a traditional lunchtime meal is la bandera dominicana that consists of rice, beans and a stewed meat. In Costa Rica, gallo pinto is a traditional food of rice, beans, meat and eggs made in a special regional salsa.
