Carreta de Bueyes or Ox Cart; Artesanías in Costa Rica - The Costa Ricans are skilled artisans and make beautiful items for tourists to purchase as a remembrance of their trips. Pottery is one of the items that you can see all over the country, not mass produced, rather made by hand.  Another souvenir is the colorful carreta de bueyes.  Ox carts are used all over Costa Rica on coffee plantations and miniatures are sold to tourists.

  • It represents only .03% of the total land of the earth yet is home to more than 5% of all life forms.
  • The country actively guards this unique biodiversity in protected areas that total more than one-fourth of its total land area.
  • There are 150 kinds of edible tropical fruits in Costa Rica.
  • There are 1,000 species of butterflies.
  • There are 850 species of birds.
  • The dense rain forests contain 2,000 species of trees and plants, 75% of which have never been studied.
  • There are two seasons, rainy and dry.
  • It is about the size of the United States state of West Virginia.
  • The current constitution of Costa Rica, adopted in 1949, provided for no army for the country.
  • Independence Day is September 15, along with many other Central American nations. Guatemala declared independence from Spain for several nations on that day in 1821.
  • The people of Costa Rica are commonly referred to as Ticos. They are known for being very friendly and helpful. The population of the country is only three million.
