Las Clases: Introduction

Volcán Póas

Volcán Poás National Park is one of the most visited areas in Costa Rica for a variety of reasons. Undoubtedly, one of the reasons is its proximity to San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Its beauty, however, is another factor that draws millions of visitors each year. From 1952-1954 this volcano spewed ash and rock all around and as recently as 1989 the park had to close because of dangerous emissions from the volcano. The trail through the forest is roughly half a mile long and there is a good path to go on. The weather in this area of Costa Rica is extremely humid and rainy. The volcano is at almost 8900 feet above sea level and is not the only volcano in Costa Rica. There are several other volcano parks and hot springs that are also visited but because Volcán Poás is less than two hours away from San José, it is a very popular one.

Ecotourism in Costa Rica

One of the growing trends in tourism in Costa Rica is the ecotourism industry. Ecotourists are people who desire to see nature, in nature. It is not a completely new desire of humans to see foreign and exotic environments. Care is taken in Costa Rica to not damage the many nationally protected reserves, even for the sake of tourism.
