The Beach

In this Unit じゆうじかん(自由時間)we are going to talk more about leisure time activities in Japan, and the things you like to do in your spare time. In Japan, one very popular activity is to go to the beach. Since Japan is surrounded by the sea, Japan has many beautiful beaches, especially on the Pacific Coast side.

Many people love going to the beach to spend some of their free time. The beach pictured is one example of this. During the summer break (なつやすみ、夏休み) the beaches become very crowded with students and families.

Many people also like to spend their spare time playing sports and games, watching movies, working on hobbies, and perhaps attending clubs and other school and non-school activities. You will learn how to talk about things you like to do in this unit.

More Free Time Activities

We've talked in other levels of Japanese, and some previous sections about some favorite free-time activities in Japan and in your life. We’ll continue here to learn more activities that the Japanese people--and possibly even you--might like to do in your spare time or じゆうじかん (地涌時間).

Judo

Judo じゅうどう(柔道) The modern form of Judo(柔道) was developed at the end of the 19th century from the ancient martial art Jujutsu by Prof. Jigoro Kano. In Judo, the aim is not only winning fights but also the training of one's body and spirit. The literal translation of Judo is "the gentle way" where softness exceeds hardness, and techniques are more important than stamina.
