Key ConceptKatakana Words カタカナのことば(カタカナの言葉)

In this unit you are learning more Katakana words that are related to fashion and clothing. As you know, Katakana is used to write all the foreign words that have been adopted for use in the Japanese language. These are called がいらいご (外来語) which means “words coming from foreign languages” and they are often referred to as “loan words”. While the majority of these words come from English, words are also borrowed from Portuguese, Dutch, German, and French (especially from the fields of music and food) as well. Loan words are often heavily Japanized in various ways, and sometimes they appear and sound quite different from the original pronunciation. It is important to study how they are pronounced and spelled in the Japanese versions in Katakana, so keep that in mind as you practice reading, writing, speaking and listening to them.
