はらじゅく(原宿)
Harajuku はらじゅく(原宿) refers to an area around Tokyo's Harajuku Station(原宿駅) which is one station north of the Shibuya(渋谷) area of Tokyo on the Yamanote(山の手) Train Line. It is the center of Japan's most extreme teenage culture and fashion styles, but it also offers shopping for adults and some important historic sites such as the nearby Meiji Shrine(明治神社)。
The focal point of Harajuku's teenage culture is Takeshita Street (たけしたどり、竹下取り) and its side streets which are lined by many trendy shops, fashion boutiques, used clothes stores, crepe stands and fast food outlets geared toward fashion and trend conscious teens.
In order to experience the teenage culture at its most extreme, visit Harajuku on a Sunday, when many young people gather around Harajuku Station and engage in cosplay ("costume play") dressed up in crazy costumes to resemble anime characters, punk musicians, and other characters.
Shops, cafes and restaurants for all ages are also found along Omotesando (表参道) a broad, tree-lined avenue that is sometimes referred to as Tokyo's Champs-Elysees.
Harajuku is not only about teenage culture and shopping, however. The Meiji Shrine 明治神社 is one of Tokyo's major shrines and it is dedicated to the Meiji Emperor. It is located just west of the railway tracks in a large green oasis shared with Yoyogi Park 代々木公園, which is a spacious public park that once hosted the Olympics in Japan. There are also museums in the area to visit.
