Key Concept! Modifying Nouns

  1. Adjective + Noun. You should remember that adjectives go before nouns in Japanese (just like they do in English). Note that no particle is needed for い-Adjectives but な-Adjectives require な to be added to the adjective when used before a noun.
    • Example: Strong man つよい おとこのひと (強い男の人)
    • Example: Pretty woman きれいな おんなのひと(綺麗な女の人)
    • Example: Handsome man ハンサムな おとこのひと(ハンサムな男の人)
  2. Noun + Noun. Sometimes nouns are used to describe things instead of adjectives. Instead of saying "an American movie", in Japanese, we would say "アメリカのえいが (アメリカの映画).
