culture icon わがし, Japanese Sweets and Cakes

wagashi Traditional Japanese sweets are called わがし. If you go to a Japanese confectionery shop, you will see various types of わがし. They are elaborately shaped and colored and they look like works of art. You can see a seasonal element in わがし, as well. The one in the photo is さくらもち, “cherry blossom rice cake.”

Japanese people, young and old, like わがし just as much as they do cookies, candies, and chocolate. You can actually make some わがし. If you are interested, check out WIKIPEDIA: Japanese Sweets and Cakes.
