きおん, Temperature
In Japan, temperature is measured differently than we measure it in the United States. We use the Fahrenheit scale, 華氏(かし), to measure degrees, but in most other areas of the world, the Celsius scale,摂氏(せっし), is used. Since you are going to need to be able to understand when you are told what temperature it is, you will need to learn how to convert degrees from one scale to the other. Don't be scared. It really isn't difficult.
To convert degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit, we use this formula: 9/5 x C + 32 = F. So, imagine the temperature outside is 18 C. Can you try to figure the degrees Fahrenheit?
9/5 is 1.8. So you take 1.8 x 18 = 32.4. Then add 32.4 + 32 = 64.4 F. You try a few. Click on the link to see if you are able to do it correctly and let your teacher know if you are having trouble.
1.
10 C 50 F
2.
0 C 32 F
3.
25 C 77 F
4.
40 C 104 F
5.
34 C 93.2 F
Now, you can see why it is important to understand the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit. If you were told that it was 34 degrees in Japan, it would be important to understand the difference between 34 C and 34 F!
Let's see now if we can convert the other way. That formula is: C = (F - 32) x 5/9. Let's imagine the temperature outside is 80 F. Let's figure that one out.
First, 80 - 32 = 48. 5/9 is 0.56, so take 0.56 x 48 = 26.88 F You try a few of these.
1.
100 F 38.2 C
2.
32 F 0 C
3.
15 F -9.38
4.
40 F 4.6 C
5.
212 F 100 C
If you have trouble calculating the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit, the following chart may help.
