どこから　きましたか。Where are you coming from?

Sometimes in talking about the places in our town, we need to talk about where we have come from. Read and click the Play button to listen to the following to see how we can talk about where we are coming from.

から here is a particle to mark a starting place, similar to “from”. Can you tell the difference between から as a sentence connector, … so …, and から as to mark a starting place from the context?

きました looks similar to きます, to come. Actually, きました is a past form of きます。In order to say, “Where are you coming from?” in Japanese, we say, “どこから　きましたか.” using the past form.

There are other examples of the past tense form that arel not discussedin Japanese I.

Narrating Sentences

Imagine that you are coming from each of the following places. Click each picture to read the sentence saying where you are coming from. Then record the sentences. You will complete an assignment covering this material.
