Real World Problems
Now that we know how to work with similar polygons, we can apply them to real world situations. Similar polygons are used in maps, blue prints and models. By using the concepts of similar polygons, we can figure out the size of the actual object if we are given a model or we can figure out the actual distance if we are given a map.
Example:
Let’s say you and your grandfather are playing with his model train set. The set is a perfect 1:87 replica of a Union Pacific Train. What this means is that the ratio of the height of the model to the height of the actual train is 1:87. If the height of the model is 5 inches, how tall was the actual train? Convert this height to feet.
Solution:
The ratio of the model to the actual train is .
1x = 87(5)
x = 435
