Naming Polygons Based on the Number of Sides

On the previous page, we saw polygons with eight sides, with four sides and with five sides. Polygons can have any number of sides (equal to or greater than three) and can be named based on the number of sides.

Triangle	3, ‘tri’ means three
Quadrilateral	4, ‘quad’ means four
Pentagon	5, ‘pent’ means five
Hexagon	6, ‘hex’ means six
Heptagon	7, ‘hept’ means seven
Octagon	8, ‘oct’ means eight
Nonagon	9, ‘non’ means 9
Decagon	10, ‘dec’ means 10
Dodecagon	12, ‘do’ means two and ‘dec’ means 10 (10+2=12)
